Agastache

FAQ - 💬

❓ Where does hummingbird mint grow best?

👉 These Agastache are unsurpassed at attracting hummingbirds. If you have them planted, the hummingbirds will find them! Native to dry, hot, and sunny climates, these varieties are ideal for low-water landscapes. They need well-drained soil in the garden, and they are sensitive to cold, wet winter soils.

❓ Does Agastache need to be deadheaded?

👉 Agastache: End of Season Care Deadhead (trim) spent flower stalks to keep the plant tidy. If growing Agastache as a perennial, don't prune or deadhead past midsummer. Pruning too late in the season will stimulate new growth in fall that may not survive the winter.

❓ Is hummingbird mint the same as hyssop?

👉 Agastache, also called Hummingbird Mint, or Hyssop, are showy, fragrant, long-blooming perennials. As their name suggests, they're highly attractive to hummingbirds.

❓ Can you overwater Agastache?

👉 Water: Although drought tolerant once established, water agastache regularly until healthy roots develop, then occasionally as needed. Overwatering can cause crown or root rot. In cooler wetter regions, keep soil dry around the base of plants in winter.

❓ Is Hummingbird Mint invasive?

👉 Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade but best in full sun. Also tolerates drought, poor soils, summer heat and humidity. Plants in this genus are non-invasive in the garden.

❓ Should Hummingbird Mint be cut back?

👉 It is essential that you not cut back hummingbird mints in the fall. Leave the old stems from last summer's growing season on the plants. Nutrients from the stems help to feed the crown and fortify it against winter cold. Wait until mid-spring in your area (a month or so before last frost) to cut them back.

❓ How many years do Agastache live?

👉 I especially love Agastache, large-flowered Rudbeckia, Gaillardia, and Delphinium. Unfortunately, they only live two or three years for me. I thought perennials could live forever.

❓ What is the hardiest Agastache?

👉 Agastache 'Blue Fortune' rugosa, this robust nonstop bloomer is probably the hardiest Agastache and one of the best butterfly feeding stations in the garden. Its fat, five-inch-long spikes of powder-blue flowers perch atop three-foot stems.

❓ Should I cut back hummingbird mint?

👉 It is essential that you not cut back hummingbird mints in the fall. Leave the old stems from last summer's growing season on the plants. Nutrients from the stems help to feed the crown and fortify it against winter cold. Wait until mid-spring in your area (a month or so before last frost) to cut them back.

❓ Do you cut back Agastache in winter?

👉 Deadhead spent blooms as and when you need to, and then avoid pruning from autumn as this could promote new growth that may not survive winter. Protect the plant from frost using fleece or dig up the rootball and move it indoors for winter.

❓ Where should you not plant mint?

👉 Avoid planting lavender, rosemary, sage, oregano, and thyme near mint. Some other bad mint companions include basil, chamomile, and parsley, along with most common herbs. Also, because mint can be invasive, you should not plant mint directly in the ground unless it's free to roam.
